Disney’s Frankenweenie – A Review
I wanted to write this Thursday, but was struck down with a horrendous migraine, so I apologize for not getting my Film Friday out sooner! Anyways, I have a review again this week, which is exciting news for me. The chance to go to private, advanced screenings is one of my favorite things about blogging, as I am a movie fanatic! And this week, I got to prescreen Disney’s Frankenweenie with my 8-year-old son, AJ.
I’ll be honest, I did not go into this with high expectations. If anything, I went because my son wanted to go. It certainly doesn’t help your mood when you go into a film expecting that you won’t like it, but then again having lower expectations makes it all the better when you are pleasantly surprised, which is exactly what happened with Frankenweenie.
At the beginning, I was a little weirded out by some of the characters, particularly a very bizarre cat and it’s owner. However, I soon found myself drawn into the story and, at the very least, intrigued by several of the characters. Before I knew it, I was loving the movie. I loved the character who represented Igor. The kid that played him was pure genius! He was fantastic! I was afraid some of it might be too dark for my son, who gets scared a little too easily sometimes, but he was enthralled, and laughing hysterically through much of the movie. We laughed, cried, and overall just loved the film. I love how Tim Burton made references several times throughout the film to the original Frankenstein stories, books and movies, and the characters and writers.
I don’t want to go into too much more detail, because I hate it when reviewers give away key plot points or too much of the story, as it takes away from the movie experience in my opinion, so you’ll always find my reviewed to be a little brief, but filled with just what you need/want to know about a movie you are inquiring about and want to know whether it is worth your time.
For Frankenweenie, I give it 4 stars out of 5, and I would bet my son would say 5 out of 5. I only deducted 1 star, as it may not be appropriate for all kids due to dark and scary elements.
