I was recently asked to review the Beam N Read LED 6-3 Beam N Read ® LED 6 Deluxe Hands Free Light (valued at $29.95). I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised by this little unit. My first thought was isn’t it kind of for older people (the image they sent with it includes an older woman reading with it), but really it has so many uses.
I love reading, but sometimes at night it bothers my husband – enter the Beam N Read. The light doesn’t bother him at all, as it has face plates to change the hue of the light. There is an orange plate that helps to filter the light from a brighter, daylight-type light to a warm, incandescent light. The other is a red filter, which is extremely helpful when you are reading in bed with a partner who is sensitive to light while trying to rest (this is one of my favorite features). Both filters clip on and are very easy to use and change out.
I used to cross-stitch, but haven’t in years, and think this would be phenomenal for cross-stitching and other complicated craft work like quilting. I have also been wanting to take up knitting, but haven’t learned how yet. However, this would be great for any of those activities, not just for keeping your personal space lighted without bothering others, but also to help with the complicated stitches you have to make. They also have a magnifier accessory that can help with detail work such as this, but note that it is for helping people with normal vision do very detailed work and isn’t a low vision aid.
One of the things I love about its use with reading is that I still enjoy reading books – I mean physical books, not just electronic books. The clip on lights often don’t stay on very well and don’t light up the whole area, meaning you are constantly having to move it around, which is cumbersome when holding a book and turning pages and having to fiddle with a light. With the Beam N Read, this isn’t necessary. Both hands are free to hold the book, flip pages, take a sip of wine, all without having to worry about fiddling with the light. I have twins who also enjoy reading books and have to share a room, so even they are enjoying this. See below for a picture of one of Danielle using the Beam N Read with the red filter (taken with Instagram).
Another great feature is its use as a parent. I have four children and with a big family someone will inevitably get sick at least once a month. When I want to check on them, I don’t want to wake them up at night, but going in their rooms (which sometimes are a little scary to navigate), but with the Beam N Read, I don’t have to worry about that. I can see my way around their room just fine and check their temperature, color, etc. without having to worry about waking them. The light is enough for me to see what I need to see, yet mild enough that it doesn’t wake my children.
I used to work at a hospital on the night shift and would have to take patient vitals in the middle of the night. This would be ideal for nurses and CNAs for checking on the patients and their vitals without disturbing them with a glaring light, as well as for charting. It provides enough light that you can do your charting bedside without disturbing the patient.
Lastly, is something I noticed on their promotional page here. They mention that it can be used as a travel light. This is a phenomenal idea and couldn’t have come at a better time for me. My family and I are all driving from Chicago to Texas for the Christmas holidays, which is a 14-hour drive. I am sure we will leave early in the morning, probably around 3:00 a.m., and drive through the day until we arrive, which will put us in dark hours for at least part of the time. I definitely plan on using this, as it’s never a good idea to keep your car interior lights on while driving and I don’t want to disturb my husband while he’s driving, or my kids while they are sleeping! I am so excited that we will have this with us for the trip!
